St Cuthbert's RC Business and Enterprise College

Date published: 27 February 2015

We return from half term rested and ready to prepare ourselves for Easter during this season of Lent, when we as a community fundraise for our charities.

As usual during Lent we are supporting Caritas through the traditional St Joseph’s Penny Collection boxes.

All students will be provided with a box from Caritas in which to collect their money. These must be returned at the end of term to form tutors.

We are also supporting the Foodbank, details of what items we are collecting will be published in the near future. We thank you for supporting your children during our Lenten appeal.

Mission Week

Pupils at St Cuthbert's RC College were delighted to present Caritas, the main charity supported by the Diocese of Salford, with a cheque for £1,434.69 during their recent Mission Week celebrations.

The money was raised by pupils and staff during Advent and will be used to maintain and develop a residential property in Didsbury called the 463 House, which has been customised to accommodate 4 young adults with life-limiting illnesses.

The Mission Week celebrations marked the end of a week during which pupils were invited to live their faith by focussing on important issues close to home - "In Our Own Back Yard".

During the week, pupils had the opportunity to find out about the work of Rochdale Food Bank; Springhill Hospice; Petrus and Rochdale Gateway Leisure and welcomed Father Kieran Mullarkey who shared his story about his vocation and how he became a priest.

In addition they enjoyed the talents of Square One Dance Troop who reinforced the message of mission through dance and personal testimony.

London Trip review

Over half term thirty pupils ranging from Yr9 - 11 ventured 'down south' to the theatre capital of the world, London.

Day one involved a sightseeing trip where pupils were busily taking selfies near Harrods, Buckingham Palace and Big Ben. The group then got their tissues at the ready for the West End production of 'Miss Saigon'. Amber Wood in Yr 10 went through at least three boxes of Kleenex!

The next day we were brave enough to enter the London Dungeon...there were a few scary moments; fortunately Mr Turner survived the torture chamber.

The world famous production of 'Phantom of the Opera' was next. Pupils were astounded at the special effects and incredible performances.

As always the pupils were a credit to the school. Their excellent behaviour and manners were commented on by both the coach driver and Janet, our trip leader.

Year 7 Water cycle half term project.

Miss Finnerty's 7A1 class were set a homework over half term to create a poster or model to explain the water cycle.

The class stepped up to the challenge and produced some excellent work which displayed lots of creativity and talent.

The runners up included Leon Platt, Natalia Czarnecka and Zainab Mohammed who all created wonderful cardboard 3D models to display and explain the water cycle.

The overall winner was Harry Boulton who demonstrated incredible ingenuity and resourcefulness and made a fully functioning paper-mache landscape complete with motorised water pump!

Prizes and vivos were distributed to the winners.

France Trip

An excited bunch of Y8s set off from school on Friday night for their trip to France. After a long journey through poor weather conditions they arrived safely in Paris, the rain stopped, a meal was enjoyed and a goodnights sleep was had by all.

The visit to Universal Studios brought the excitement of exhilarating rides and an amusing selection of action photographs from the rides.

The Disney Park did not disappoint either, prizes were bought for our Enterprise Activity during Lent – a tombola and auction, the day was made complete by an enjoyable Wild West Ranch Supper.

The final day included sightseeing in Paris and a visit to the Montparnasse Building before the long journey home.

Everyone enjoyed the trip and gained much from visiting a foreign country a first for many of the pupils involved. Year 8 were a credit to the school and their parents.

We welcome back from maternity leave Mrs Knight, Mrs Ellis and Mrs Shuttleworth.
