Welcome back

It has been a very busy and positive start to this half term following the mid - term break. Highlights already have included some students performing on stilts at the after school club run by Sky Light Circus, 6th form students Internship Placements are so very positive and the feedback we have received from parents and carers for the holiday club programme last week was great.

World Book Day / Week

You will receive information across the key stages of the various activities which are being planned as part of the World Book Day or is some cases, World Book week. This is a great opportunity for students and staff to wear the costume of a favorite book of theirs or a character from a book of their choice. More details will be sent home with students.

6th form Film nomination

One of the 6th form tutors, Fran, has received a fantastic piece of news this week which informed her that the documentary film project, her media group of students have produced, has been shortlisted in a national award run by INTO FILM. They have been invited to the film awards at the Empire, Leicester Square, London later this month to see if they have been successful. Their film has been shortlisted as one of only three from hundreds of entries . What an amazing feat and well done to Fran and her students who I know will enjoy the day in London. Who needs the Oscars?

Comic Relief Day – 13 March

More information will sent from the Health and Well Being Team with regards to events for Comic Relief, our theme will be ` Make your face funny for money ` and will incorporate a variety of activities including face painting, Skylight Circus, Road to Rio ( Rebound, Run, Swim to Rio ), Clown Hunt orienteering and an Ice Rink to name a few. A fantastic day for a fantastic cause.

Redwood Short Breaks

A reminder that the youth clubs take place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 6pm – 8pm, and Saturday morning 10am – 12. Students are welcome to attend and should parents require more details please contact school.

Finally

It was lovely to meet some of the current Year 6 pupils this week and their parents from various schools who visited school as part of the transition programme for September. It was great to meet you all and I look forward to meeting with you again in the near future.

Year 8/9 Yellow enjoyed sculpting monsters for our Monster Mash in Art. Special mention to Asako who completed the task independently and Josh whose monster ‘Yell-O’ won the competition.

Also 8/9 Yellow have devised a survey to help them make a Redwood movie database in their ICT lessons

8/9 Blue are studying “Les Miserables” in Performing Arts. Although they are thoroughly interested and enjoying linked activities they are finding the DVD miserable. Result? Pupils are all asking sensible and relevant questions and understanding the story really well.

In SSC Art the pupils have been investigating printing. They had to print a peacock using their hands. Dan especially enjoyed the experience. The KS4 students have been studying sculpture. They made coil pots out of clay.

Cook and Eat have been practicing their chopping skills. Students also had to organise their cooking schedule and decide who was making what. They made cheese and onion pie and they were lovely.

Miss Greenhalghs’ class have been practicing their independence skills.

The Bridging Year have been visiting Oldham College, Bury College and Rochdale training centre to look at all the different courses they provide. Dawn is now looking for work experience places for the Bridging Year.
