World Book Day / Week

There have been some wonderful costumes on display as part of 'World Book Week' and I know that the students have enjoyed this unusual literacy work! Well done to all who took part!

Skills North West Event

A number of key stage 4 and post 16 students are visited the Skills North West event this week to get information relating to career opportunities. I know from the feedback that it has been a very popular event.

Student Council

The next meeting of the student council will be held next week. The council are very enthusiastic, they take their responsibilities very seriously and I am always impressed by the outcomes of the meetings. They are a credit to themselves!

Magic Breakfast

Large numbers of youngsters are accessing the breakfast opportunities when they arrive in school and it is a very popular and healthy way of starting the school day! A big ` thanks ` to those staff who are co-ordinating the process so well done!

Redwood Short Breaks

A reminder that the youth clubs take place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 6pm – 8pm, and Saturday morning 10am – 12. Students are welcome to attend and should parents require more details please contact school.

KS3

World Book day

Instead of staff & pupils, lots of book characters arrived at Redwood. Harry Potter & Hermione, Princesses & Pirates and all varieties of animals from books, to name but a few. We all had a fantastic time and enjoyed interacting with story tellers in the Performing Arts studio.

Sensory Story Time

Pupils from Oulder Hill and Year 7 inclusion group joined 8/9 Red to share some bag book sensory stories. They read ‘Lost in London’ and ‘The Haircut’. It was great for all pupils of different ages and abilities to work together. On Thursday Year 7 Yellow will be interacting with 8/9 Purple to do the same stories and are working with Key Stage 5 for a Harry Potter experience!!

Enrichment Group D continued with library activities to complement the previous trip to Heywood library. They looked at their favourite books and made bookmarks.

Teachers Story Telling

Some of Key Stage 3 students were treated to a story telling session by their reading teachers who were dressed as characters from their favourite books or authors.

Miss Butterworth began, accompanied by her ‘Umpa Lumpas’, and read from ‘Charlie & the Chocolate Factory’. She was followed by a ‘MIXED UP’ Mr Jackson reading from his daughter’s favourite story “Me Wrong”. Mr Hall & Stacy joined forces and performed a rendition of ‘Little Red Riding’ from “Revolting Rhymes” whilst Mrs Walsh had a feast reading from the “Hungry Caterpillar”.

Toni introduced some culture with an extract from Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” followed by an old classic-no not Ms Gardner the reader but “Puss in Boots”. Mrs Lansom-Smith unsurprisingly lowered the tone to finish with “the Cow” from Roald Dahl’s book of poems “Dirty Beasts” The students were a wonderful audience and fun was had by all, but mostly the staff!

Year 8/9 Purple & Blue groups have enjoyed playing ‘Top Trumps’ as part of their lesson on databases.

Tutor Group 8A went to Wythenshawe Wheelers on for one of the student’s birthdays.

KS4

It’s been a busy week for the Bridging Year, as parents, carers and students had a presentation from NCS ‘The Challenge’ to discuss a once in a lifetime residential. They also received their Food Hygiene Level One Certificate in Assembly. And spent some time practicing interviewing techniques ready for their work experience placements.
Patrick has been helping out in the department. He has a very good work attitude and staff are very pleased with him!

For world book week students in Miss Greenhalgh’s class have been drawing pictures of their favourite book characters. They have also been making books and sewing the binding.

This year Red Nose Day is on the 13 March this year. SEB students have already been practicing wearing their red noses for the day.

KS5

In groups 3 & 4 Music, students were introduced to the Melodica. It’s played by blowing into the mouth piece and pressing the keys. We experimented with playing different notes at the same time.

5AB have carried out a litter survey on the school grounds to support the topic this term of The Environment. They looked for litter in The Street and outside. Patrick found drinks cans and Nasima found chewing gum. We saw there were plenty of bins for the rubbish but people don’t always use them.

James Barker has been leading a group in Healthy Living.
Students have been looking at and experimenting with different movement styles using the large equipment, including the balance beam and the trampolines.

Student of the Week

Dexter - has worked really hard in sensory interaction. He has been helpful and been using his initiative.

Most Improvement Student

Adeel - for working really hard in Horticulture. Adeel has been following instructions and working independently.
