Gold and Silver Medals for Wardle Academy Netball Team

Date published: 10 March 2015

The Wardle Academy Year 7 Netball Team has gone from strength to strength this year, winning first place at the PGL Netball Tournament in Borreaton Park and second place in the Rochdale Schools Netball League.

The team, which has gone through the entire season with only one loss, has improved their ability and has been thoroughly committed to training each week since the school year began in September.

The girls have a desire to develop their game each week. Even after several convincing victories the girls are keen to work on areas of the game they can improve, often asking PE Teacher, Miss Shepherd to provide extra training on attacking and defending tactics.

Niamh Clegg, captain of the team, has stepped up to the mark and ensures all girls are at training and ready to progress as a team.

The attacking team, Minnie Barnes, Fern Lord, Evie Gray and Molly Riley have provided the team with some convincing goal differences, ensuring they had a positive lead in the league.

In addition to the good form of attack, Niamh Clegg, Holly Fowler, Sally Routledge and Elianna Morris ensure defence is strong and make it difficult for opposing teams to score against them.

Recent results show that hard work pays of as the Wardle Academy team won the first place prize at the competitive two day PGL Netball Tournament in Borreaton Park this weekend and narrowly missed out on first place in the Rochdale Schools Netball League by one point.

Miss Shepherd, PE Teacher at Wardle Academy said: “I am delighted for the girls, the commitment they have shown and the pride they have when representing Wardle Academy is great to see.

"It has been a pleasure coaching such a willing group of girls, they never fail to put 100% into every game and always want to develop and improve.

“We had a fantastic weekend away at Borreaton Park where the girls won a well-deserved first place. We now have another winner’s cup to add to the ever expanding trophy cabinet at Wardle and although we narrowly missed out on the winner’s trophy in the Rochdale Schools Netball League I have every belief that the title next year will be Wardle’s!”

Well done on a great season and fantastic results!
