‘Paul's Story’

One of our Post 16 students and a member of his family and staff, will be attending the awards presentation at the Empire in Leicester Square, London, after the documentary film made by the Post 16 students was nominated for an award. What a fantastic achievement and no doubt they will all enjoy a unique day. What great ambassadors for the Post 16 department.

Comic Relief

Students and staff from all across the school worked collaboratively to take part in a selection of games and challenges including ice skating, swimming, rebound therapy and indoor rowing.

The day proved an amazing success and gave staff and students alike the opportunity to socialise and compete with students from other Key Stages. The focus of the day was fun, fun, fun with every activity being recorded and pooled together to be recorded towards our Road to Rio.

As a school we have set ourselves to turn our activity into distance and try to reach Rio (home of the next Olympic Games) 17,800km. Distances are still being calculated so keep an eye out in next week’s newsletter for a progress update.

BBC School News Day

Throughout today our students and staff have been involved in recording various activities as part of BBC School News day which is a national event. Details will be posted on the website in due course.

Bridging Year Programme

On Friday some of our students have been invited to attend the Greater Manchester Provider Network meeting to launch the Green Power Challenge. Redwood is a ` pioneer ` in this type of project and as a result our `Bridgers` have been invited to demonstrate their `Kit Car` which they have constructed and demonstrated at a special racing event in September last year. What a great opportunity for those youngsters.

Winter Games : Sports City

A number of our students are taking part in the Greater Manchester Winter Games at various sporting venue across Manchester next Tuesday. 13 students are in the rugby competition, some students are rowing and many other sports are involved also.

Redwood Short Breaks

A reminder that the youth clubs take place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 6pm – 8pm, and Saturday morning 10am – 12. Students are welcome to attend and should parents require more details please contact school.

HMI Monitoring Visit

Thank you to parents and carers who completed the Parent View survey on line as part of the recent HMI visit. Your support is very much appreciated and the feedback from the day was positive following the inspectors discussions with staff, governors and students. When we receive the formal feedback letter it will be posted on the website.

KS4
To celebrate Red Nose Day students enjoyed the ice rink, Skylight Circus and dressing up in red. In KS4 we ‘made our faces funny for money’ by making moustaches and painting our faces.
Mrs Taskers’ class and a few other students took part in a baking competition, they made lots of buns in the morning and then spent the afternoon designing and decorating them with funny faces. Students put a lot of effort in, really enjoyed it and came up with some brilliant designs. Ben and Danny won an Easter Egg each for their designs.

KS5
Had a fab time at the Winter Olympics day to support Comic Relief. Damon used the interactive programme to make a face funny. Tom enjoyed some rebound therapy and the ice skating was a big hit. There were clowns hidden all over the school and some were pretty hard to find. The best thing was meeting up with classes from other key stages. It was great to spend time working together and socialising.

Most Improved Student award went to Maithe for working hard in photography using the photo booth independently to create lots of different effects.

Student of the Week award went to Damon for working really well independently in wheelchair dancing and communicating really well with Anne in the work place.

Asad is in charge of Customer Service in Hudsons Enterprise Café. He also does shelf stacking. Students on the pre-Internship route serve customers, make coffee and Paninis up till 1o’clock every day for pre-orders except they are closed on Thursdays.

KS3

Each week Sue & Julie and the peer signers will be teaching the whole of the Key Stage 3 department some new signs for communication, followed by a song. This week our sign-a-long signs we have learned are ‘Secretary, lunchtime helper & carer’.

The Year 7 inclusion group visited the National Football Museum to take part in a Poetry Workshop hosted by Paul Cookson their resident poet. They had a fantastic time.

Pupils from Springside had a tour of Key Stage 3 as part of their transition for staring in September.

Year 7 Green made a sandwich box in their DT lesson and this week they made a sandwich in their Food Technology lesson to go in it. The students worked really hard and were very proud of their efforts. They are looking forward to taking them home to enjoy for their tea.
