Student Consultation meeting

Over 30 students took part in a consultation meeting with members of the local authority on the proposals for additional new build from September 2016. Detailed and extremely relevant questions were raised by the students in many aspects of the proposals from the impact on the playground space to health and safety issues. All agreed it was a great opportunity and I have asked for student volunteers to be on the working party to discuss the plans for the demountable classroom and the Redwood Education and Enterprise Centre to be developed in Middleton.

Education, Health and Social Care Plans : Year 9 Parent Workshop

We will be hosting a special workshop for parents and carers of our Year 9 students to give an overview of the ` My Plan ` documentation and process to support your role in the meetings which start in May. The workshop will be delivered by Sue Harris an independent consultant, and follows on from the excellent workshop Year 9 students had with Sue and her team.

Transition Visits

We welcomed Year 6 students and staff from Springside and Newlands this week as part of their transition programme as we prepare for their start at Redwood in September. It was good to meet all the youngsters again.

Redwood Short Breaks

A reminder that the after school clubs and youth clubs started again this week.

Magic Breakfast

The Magic Breakfast programme has been in place since February and is proving to be a great success . Thank you to our breakfast team for organizing such a fantastic provision for all students should they require it

KS3

Pupils in 8/9 Blue have started their new topic in English. They are doing narrative poetry: The Highway Man. This week they have enjoyed learning all about Dick Turpin and his antics.

Year 7 Blue have been studying Medieval Times and are really enjoying learning about Castles. They will be visiting Clitheroe Castle.

This week year 9 students took part in a ‘My Plan’ workshop; this is to assist students to think about what they want to do in the future.

Also 8/9 Blue worked well in pairs building scenery from their animations.

Year 8/9 Green have just started their new topic in Performing Arts; they are studying The Phantom of the Opera. This week they explored the characters and found appropriate costumes.

Pupils in the Lilac room have visited Queens Park this week where they had a fantastic time in the sand pit. They all had a lovely time and were very lucky with the weather.

Two fantastic achievements this week have been that Toby has had his first drink of orange juice; he has continued to taste the juice for the rest of the week. Connor has done some fantastic mark making this week too.

KS4

Every Wednesday morning 4U make bacon butties to sell to staff, they have managed to raise lots of money for their class enterprise.

4B have been researching leisure time this week.

Here at Redwood we are fortunate enough to be part of the ‘magic breakfast’ scheme. Students are provided with bagels and a variety of cereals every morning.

Did you know?

Magic Breakfast already feeds more than 17,000 children each morning, but have 270+ schools on their waiting list and that over half a million children in the UK go to school hungry every day.

It costs just 22p to give a child a Magic Breakfast. With your help we can solve the problem of hunger in the morning for good.

KS5

The gardening group have recently completed a large scale clean and clear project in Milnrow, Rochdale. The site was a disgraceful example of how fly-tipping and littering can affect local residents. A passing tenant informed the group that nobody had cleared the site for at least ten years.

However, the group worked tirelessly for three weeks and have made a huge difference to the site which is now a pleasant feature for the local community.

This week students from the Real Work Project have been painting the outdoor benches, which were donated for students and staff to sit on during break and lunch times.

They worked really hard sanding down the wood and then painting them with three coats of timber care paint.

We were very lucky to get some lovely weather so the benches dried quickly between coats. The benches look fabulous. We will get many years use from them now.

The Animal Care group had great fun taking the goats for a walk. That’s not always as easy as it sounds. Sometimes it was more a case of the goat taking the student for a walk.

Student of the week

Abbey for excellent responses in English, listening to Poetry and for taking a leading role in Body Combat to help the new members of the group.

Most Improved Student – Charlotte for amazing focus and enthusiasm when using the violin, and for having a great week of engagement.

Aaron is the latest student to complete the Independent Travel Programme. He travels independently to his work placement in Middleton on Mondays and catches 3 buses to and from school Tuesday to Friday.  Well done Aaron.
