Staff farewells

We say 'goodbye' and a huge thanks to Julie Friel, Deputy Headteacher, who is retiring after a career dedicated to the education and support of youngsters with special educational needs.

Julie will be sorely missed by all her colleagues at Redwood for her expertise, commitment, dedication as a teacher and also for her personal qualities which make her so popular in school and also with so many families who she has supported over the years at Rydings and Redwood Schools. Thanks Julie for your support, it has been wonderful to work alongside you.

We also say 'farewell' to Julie Fraser and Christine Richardson, teachers in Key Stage 5 and 3 respectively, who are also taking full time retirement and everybody wishes you a long and healthy retirement.

Health Care Proposals

Many thanks to those parents and carers who have replied with your views and concerns on the proposals I sent out last week for the re-organisation of the health care provision. Your views are vital and I will be collating them and presenting them as part of our collective response.

Your support is much appreciated on this issue. I have been informed that the Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust have agreed to halt the implementation of the planned proposals until 1st November instead of the original 24 August. I will keep families updated on this important development.

Internship Graduation Awards

Our Internees received their award at the Graduation ceremony at the REEC, Redwood Education and Enterprise Centre. All the students wore appropriate cap and gowns for the awards which included input from the various employers who are crucial to the programme. A huge 'well done' and thanks goes to Marie, the Internship Co-ordinator, Jane and Ann, Job Coaches, for their dedication and commitment during the year. It was a fantastic night.

Healthy Living Award

Staff and students who attended the awards ceremony at the Hilton Hotel in Deansgate last week were delighted with the presentation of the 'Healthy Living Award' which acknowledges the support for students which is part of our Health and Well Being programme . This latest award testifies the hard work and dedication by the Health and Wellbeing team.

Year 7 Pupil Award

Well done to Beren in Year 7 who has been presented with certificated which acknowledges his performance in the Maths and Science lessons at Oulder Hill School. Well done Beren.

KS4

Students took part in a team building activity with Sean and Simon from Commando Joes. They looked at how to survive in the wild and the importance of shelters. Students designed shelters out of paper and straws and then used bamboo canes and waterproof camouflage material. They then poured water on them to see how effective they were, some were better than others. Both students and staff had a great time and staff were particularly impressed with the focus and team work showed by the students.

Our end of year celebration party was a great success, there was food, party games and lots of dancing.

KS5

This week Key stage 5 have enjoyed cultural week and visited Neeli mosque in Rochdale where we learnt about The Five Pillars of Islam and what happens in the mosque.

They also went to the Jewish museum in Manchester which is laid out like a synagogue. Students explored some of the artefacts such as the Tallit and the yad.

Thank you

As we come to the end of this academic year I would like to take this opportunity to thank parents and carers for your support throughout the school year which has been invaluable in assisting the school to continue to improve following the inspection in November. Your contributions at annual reviews, parents evenings, My Plan meetings and your support on a daily basis, via home / school planners, is crucial.

I hope that you enjoy a wonderful summer holiday and I look forward to working with you in the new school year in September.
