Refugee Crisis

St Cuthbert's pupils and staff have been putting their faith into action by organising a collection of clothes, food and household items for refugee families in need.

Moved by the shocking pictures in the media and news coverage of the plight of many desperate refugee families, pupils and staff wanted to act quickly and do something practical to help them.

When they heard that St Cuthbert's past pupils Tom McNeeney and John Gilligan were planning to drive to the refugee camp in Calais with a van of donated items for the refugees, an appeal was immediately launched in school.

Over a 5 day period, staff and pupils were invited to bring in clothes, tinned and dried food, bottled water, cooking utensils and small toiletry items to be delivered to refugees from Syria, Afghanistan and Africa who have fled their war-torn homes in desperation.

Pupils willingly helped to load the van and wave off Tom and John with the good wishes and prayers from the school community for a safe return journey.

“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you made me welcome." Matthew 25:35.

Poetry Competition

In order to celebrate National Poetry Day, the staff at St Cuthbert’s are on the lookout for poetic talent across all year groups. This year’s theme is “LIGHT”.

All you have to do is write an original poem that links to the theme; it can be any form, any length and about a subject of your choice. The closing date for the competition is Monday 5 October.

You should submit your entries to Miss Machen in the English Department.

The winners will be announced on National Poetry Day, Thursday 8 October. Good Luck.

Year 11 Achievement Evening

We celebrated the first of our Y11 achievement evenings on Thursday 17 September. The first group of Y11 students and their parents came to school. They were introduced to progress 8 and celebrated their success so far. They were given advice on how to achieve their best over the next year across all eight subject areas. Students were challenged to complete at least two to three hours of work every evening and at the weekends. There was a great buzz to the evening as Y11 started to accept responsibility for the hard work over the coming months. We are looking forward to the first Y11 progress review to see who is on target to achieve their best in the final exams. Dr Meehan will be sharing breakfast with a number of students over the next few weeks to motivate them to give their very best and achieve the highest grades.
