Health Review proposals

You will be aware that currently the NHS Foundation Trust are reviewing the level of provision within the special schools across Rochdale. I want to emphasis that the support the school receives from the health care workers is still in place and will remain so for the considerable future to ensure our youngsters receive the correct level of medical support. The views of school are being presented to ensure that the review is aware of the issues for each school. As soon as I have any further information I will inform parents and carers.

Year 6 Open Day

There was an excellent response to the Year 6 Open Day this week as potential parents and carers toured the school and met with staff and students to support the transition process. A big `well done` to Beren in Year 8 who acted as guide and escort and was an excellent ambassador.

Year 7 – 9 Parents Pastoral meeting

To give parents and carers of students in Year 7,8 and 9 the opportunity to discuss how well your son / daughter has settled into the new term, a pastoral parents evening will be held on Tuesday 13 October, between 3.30pm – 5pm. This will give you the opportunity to meet your son / daughter`s form tutor and discuss the social and personal development targets in place. Details will be circulated next week.

Internship Programme / REEC

The internees have settled in well into their work placements and are all very positive. Thank you to parents for your support with this. Also, despite a few snagging issues, the programmes at the REEC (Redwood Education and Enterprise Centre) based in Middleton have also had a very positive beginning.

Students at Aintree

A group of key stage 4 students and staff took part in the Green Power Challenge around Aintree circuit racing against other educational and FE establishments in the car designed and built at Mantra as part of the vocational learning programme. What a fantastic opportunity to show the skills.

Extended Schools Provsion

The after school and youth club programme will be running from Monday 28th September for those parents and carers who have requested a place. It is hoped that the school is able to meet each request for clubs which meet the individual needs of the students and an alternative club can be offered. For more details please contact James Barker, Extended Schools Co-ordinator at school.

KS3

Year 8/9 Blue PE students have been learning how to play hockey. Hockey is a game where you have to score a goal with a ball that can only be hit with a stick. The students have been learning rules of the game like not raising the stick above the knee as this could result in a painful injury. Ouch.

In music students have been learning how to use the keyboards. They have been using the different controls and effect buttons to fade in and out the sounds. Could this be the start of a new band.

In English year 7 have been looking at the story of Charlie and the chocolate factory. This is a story about a boy called Charlie who wins a ticket to visit a magical chocolate factory owned by Willy Wonka. The only problem the year 7 have reading it is they all get very hungry afterwards.

Lilac one and two have been exploring various foods which we associate with summer. The students were given the opportunity to taste, touch and smell grapes, pineapple, melon, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and our favourite bit… ice cream complete with a flake. Yum yum.

KS4

This week students have made an enthusiastic start to their pottery lesson. Some have even had a go at throwing clay on to the wheel.

SSC students have been looking around school for equipment that uses electricity.

Key stage 4 started the school year with a departmental breakfast. Students in 4J went out and bought the ingredients that they wanted and then prepared everything to serve to the other students. The breakfast was a great success and everyone enjoyed themselves.

Miss Doggett and Mrs Ali were extremely impressed by the hard work and enthusiasm displayed by the cook and eat team this week. They made roasted vegetable wraps and lemon and ginger cheese cake, all from scratch.

KS5

Student have busy been making cakes, scones and flapjacks for the MacMillan coffee morning.

Students have been voting for their representatives in the student council election. It was a very close, with just a few votes separating the elected candidates from the other nominees.

Congratulations and thank you to all students who showed an interest.

5A have been exploring using technology. The Tap-It has some great visual programmes and even if you lean on the screen, it still works.

In Music this week, to start our topic on Performance, Patrick has enjoyed taking on the role of the conductor. Tom was able to play fast or slow as directed and
Jordan was able to play quietly and then loudly as instructed

Student of the week

Patrick- For settling in to his 2nd year smoothly and being helpful at lunchtimes. Patrick is always smiling and willing to help others.

Most Improved Student

Katie - For taking part in lessons and communicating her needs. Katie has also shown improvement in her behavior by walking sensibly down corridors.
