Whitworth students - reading in peculiar places

Date published: 08 October 2015

Bookworms devoured hundreds of pages and read books in peculiar places as part of a summer reading challenge.

The new Year 7s at Whitworth Community High School were invited to take part in the challenge over the summer holidays to prepare them for starting school.

There were three ways to enter – either by reading six or more books, reviewing a book or ‘extreme reading’ in an unusual location.

Three students were picked to win each of the categories and were presented with a voucher, chocolate and a certificate. Current students also took part and staff joined in being photographed reading in unusual locations.

Samer Qureshi, 11, was successful when she read her book on the feet of the Angel of the North.

“I was going to have my picture taken at Niagara Falls but it was so wet I would have needed an umbrella,” she said.

Holly Butcher, 11, was a winner with her review of Diary of a Wimpy Kid. She said: “I explained all about the characters and the funniest bits that I liked.

“I like books because you can put yourself into the story and you feel like what you are reading is happening to you.”

Jennifer Forbes, 11, read a total of 11 books and a photograph of her reading her book inside the roof top box on a car won her a prize.

Rory Brogan, 11, reviewed a film to win his prize and he also read two books during the summer holidays.

It was the first time Whitworth Community High School has organised a reading challenge and it was a huge success.
