Science News

The first STEM session of the academic year took place on Thursday 12 November. Dr Louise Dennis from the University of Liverpool came to St Cuthbert's and ran the session on Lego Rovers; planetary robots.

Year 7 students were given the opportunity to learn about the teleoperation of the lego rovers.

Using an android tablet the students were able to drive a Lego robot forwards and backwards and to turn it left, right or stop it. The travel and turning speeds could be varied, allowing users to experiment with the compromises between speed and control.

Charity News

All of our COPE (Certificate of Personal Effectiveness) classes are raising money for Francis House. We have had a visit from Kath Ansley, who has talked each class through the good work that Francis House do for young adults, children and their families.

Pupils then decided in their groups how they will raise money and came up with some fantastic ideas. We have a bake sale, a raffle, karaoke and Christmas decorations /snow globes for sale. The pupils are working really hard on their projects and are hoping to raise a lot of money for Francis House. We hope staff will respond to their hard work by buying all the goodies on offer.

Operation Christmas Child is well underway with our Year 7 team. We have lots of shoeboxes which have already been filled with toys, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soaps, and pencil crayons. We would really appreciate any donations as it also costs £3 per box to ship.

‘Somebody’s Sister, Somebody’s Daughter’

Our year 10 students have watched a performance which was presented by GW theatre. The theme of the drama was based on child sexual exploitation. This was a powerful drama which gave pupils the opportunity to understand the importance of this issue. They also had the chance to take part in some workshops. There is also an opportunity for parents and carers to watch the next two evening performances at venues in Heywood and Rochdale. These are free to attend and are aimed at parents and carers. These will be on Tuesday 24th Nov at the Riverside at 6.30pm or Wednesday 25th November at Heywood Civic Centre at 6.30pm. Email theare.booking@rochdale.gov.uk for more information or to book a place.
