PE News

A huge ‘congratulations’ go to M.Kirby, H.Peel, K. Suthers, and P. Ullah who won the Rochdale School’s Badminton competition. They now go forwards to represent Rochdale in the next Greater Manchester round in January.

The winning streak continues with the success of our Under 16s girls’ football team who were crowned as Rochdale Champions at the school’s competition. Miss Holt was thrilled with their performance despite the weather.

Embrace Youth Conference

A group of our Pupil Chaplains and Music Liturgy Group members represented St Cuthbert's at the Embrace 2015 Youth Conference at Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King last Saturday.

This year's theme was "Build My Kingdom!" - A challenge given to each of us. Our pupils joined 100s of other young people from across the northwest to take part in workshops, drama, prayer & worship. Our very own Mr Turner was part of the Embrace team of musicians but was able to come over and chat to pupils.

The day ended with Mass celebrated by the Archbishop of Liverpool, Malcolm McMahon and our own Bishop from the Diocese of Salford, John Arnold. Our pupils were wonderful ambassadors for St Cuthbert's throughout the day and took part in all the activities.

Food Technology

A massive well done to Year 10 Food Technology GCSE students. All of these students have successfully achieved their Level 2 Award in Food Safety for Catering. They will receive their certificates in assembly next week. Congratulations from the Technology Department.

Anti-Bullying Week

Anti-bullying week was a big success. We did a whole school pupil voice survey in order to get the views of students of how bullying is dealt with in school. The results of the questionnaire will help us to plan how to move forward with our anti bully strategies. We have received several applications from students wishing to be anti-bully ambassadors, those chosen will be announced on Friday.

The Year 9 media classes produced two short films which were very impressive and can be viewed on our Facebook page. Last Friday, to mark and celebrate the end of anti-bullying week, the school were invited to join in Karaoke in the school hall. There were lots of excellent performances and teachers were extremely impressed with the braveness of our some of our pupils. Well done to all who took part and thank you to those who supported the occasion.

We’re now going to continue the karaoke every Friday afternoon with the intention of raising money for our Advent charities. Please come-along to support to the cause.

Operation Christmas Child

Although a little bit earlier than the other year groups, this week brought to a close all of the hard work from our year 7 pupils and tutors in their advent charity efforts. Carol Hartley, a representative from Samaritan’s Purse, came in to meet the pupils and thank them for all of their very generous contributions towards this year’s Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Appeal.

This is the first time that the year group have been involved with charitable efforts at St Cuthbert’s and they rose to the challenge which was set by their Head of Year, Mr Lockett. An initial target of 50 shoeboxes was set for the year group, with pupils bringing in a range of different contributions Pupils managed to exceed the target set and donate a grand total of 60 shoeboxes which will now be sent to countries such as Kyrgyzstan and Latvia to children who may not receive a present this year.

On hearing to the final total, Head of Year 7 at St Cuthbert’s, Mr Lockett, commented by saying that “this has been a fantastic achievement by all the year 7 pupils and it has been so pleasing to see how hard they have worked to help others in their first year at St Cuthbert’s. They really have taken on board the values and spirit of Operation Christmas Child and I know that their efforts will be greatly appreciated by the children who receive these gifts. They have now set themselves a benchmark for all future charitable efforts and I could not be prouder of them.”

'Jack and the Beanstalk'

'Jack and the Beanstalk' tickets are available from the school office. Pupils have been rehearsing hard this week with the show band to perfect the musical numbers.

Yr 9 Media students have been inventing their own products. They are superior to anything you have seen on 'The Apprentice'!

Yr 11 Drama students are rehearsing 'The Crucible' as part of their controlled assessment. Pupils have been blocking scenes and recording progress on their rehearsal logs.

The school Show Band has been busy practising the music for the school pantomime. They are currently working on 'All I ask of You' from 'Phantom of the Opera'

Yr 10 and 11 Art students are well on their way with their final pieces for controlled assessments. Mr Julier and Mrs Hamilton have been impressed with the creativity and originality of the design.
