A visit from the Kent-based Papa Joe's All Stars, north of Watford is a rare occurrence and the Gabriel's devotees showed their appreciation of a fine performance from this long established outfit led by drummer Jerry Card who has played with some of the world's finest bands.
With a front line of reedsman Charlie Connor, cornet player Ken Sims and trombone Barry Weston, over 100 years of experience showed in their expertise and individuality in numbers such as 'Gatemouth Blues', 'Cake Walking Babies', 'Sleepy Time Down South' and a variety of rags and standards.
Solos from Ken Sims on 'I Want A Little Gin' (not politically correct today) and 'Give Me Your Jelly Roll' (with vocals) and favourites like 'Baby Face' and 'Fidgety Feet' were well received as another successful evening came to an end.
Making up the rhythm section with Card, Andy Ford's banjo and veteran bass player Mike Godwin, who grew up playing bass guitar with the 60's Liverpool sound, provided the ideal blend for a band the regulars hope will have a speedy return.
