St Andrew's commemorating the outbreak of WW1

Date published: 23 July 2014

On Sunday and Monday (August 3 and 4) we will be commemorating the outbreak of World War One.

We will have a candlelit Vigil on the Sunday evening, 8pm to 9pm, which will be a service of repentance, remembrance, reflection and reconciliation.

We are asking regular worshippers to bring family and neighbours and we extend a warm welcome to everyone.

On the Monday the church will be open from 10am to 4pm when we will be serving tea and coffee and exhibiting many items of memorabilia associated with the First World War, plus information acquired by one of our worshippers, Janice Halstead, who has worked tirelessly in her efforts to make our two-day commemoration one in which we humbly do justice, through God, to the memory and ultimate sacrifices of our fallen heroes.

We have had a good response to our appeal for relatives or descendants of the fallen heroes named on our Memorial Scroll in the lady Chapel to make contact with us, including one from as far away as Durham.

Also during the hours between 10am and 4pm on Monday week we will be escorting visitors, at regular intervals if the demand requires it, to the nearby graveyard where there are about a dozen war graves plus many family graves which also bear the names of fallen heroes from the First World War.

In Church there will be opportunities to reflect quietly on what happened 100 years ago, to pray privately, to take light refreshment and to generally show respect and gratitude to those who gave their lives in the service of their country.

Anyone requiring further information is asked to ring our church warden, Susan Knight, on 01706 371393.
