Date published: 14 March 2015

St Aidan’s Church will be celebrating one hundred years of worship and witness in Sudden on Sunday 22 March,

The service for the consecration of the church was held on the 24 March 1915 and was conducted by the then Lord Bishop of Manchester, the Right Reverend Dr Edmund Arbuthnott Knox.

On the day he described St Aidan’s as “a very beautiful church, with a deep tone of reverence breathing through its architecture.”

During the service, prayers were said for Britain and her allies in the war, for our sailors and soldiers (especially those from the St Aidan’s district) and for a
speedy restoration of peace.

Holy Communion was administered by the Bishop, assisted by Rev Hartley Harrison, Curate in Charge. The collection at the consecration service amounted to £80.

St Aidan’s was designed by leading architect, Temple Moore of Hampstead, London and was built by TS Ullathorne of Selby at a cost of £6,000.

The foundation stone had previously been laid in October 1913 by Beatrice Kemp, Lady Rochdale.

Rev Michael Read, the current vicar at St Aidan’s, commented: “As we celebrate our heritage, we hope to continue the spirit of determination and purpose shown by the founders of our church and thereby be a strong church family, promoting and maintaining the life, work and future of this popular Parish Church.”

A special Eucharist Service, conducted by the Bishop of Manchester, the Right Reverend David Walker will be held on Sunday 22 March starting at 10am.
