Rochdale shares its secrets for supporting carers

Date published: 19/10/2005

The good example set by Rochdale borough in supporting people with caring responsibilities is being shared this week at a special conference.

Visitors from local councils, health and voluntary organisations from as far afield as Suffolk and Northern Ireland came together to see what Rochdale does to support carers, to help them develop or improve services in their own area.

The Government has recognised Rochdale Council as a 'Beacon Council' for its work to support carers. It is one of just four local authorities in the country to have achieved this title.

Across Rochdale borough, thousands of people care for relatives and friends with many varying needs. A carer can be anyone who looks after a relative or child, partner or friend who cannot manage without his or her help because they are ill, frail or have a disability. Much of the work that carers do is vital but is unpaid and can often go unrecognised.

Beacon status recognises the good practice that has been developed locally. The borough's Adult and Child Care Services have been recognised as centres of excellence in local government from which others can learn.

Shabnam Sardar, Beacon Co-ordinator, said: "The Carers' Resource is a relatively new service, which has flourished in a very short space of time. This award is a real achievement for carers and staff who are
highly-motivated and want to make a real difference."

"Carers are very involved with the day to day running of the service. They work as volunteers to cover general office duties, send out information, support other carers and are also running some of our class groups.

"Our Carers Management Steering Group is also working towards taking control of The Carers' Resource to realise the vision they had some four years ago. "The award is real recognition that what we are doing in Rochdale is cutting edge and others can learn from our approach and services. We are delighted and very proud."

The Carers' Resource is based in Water Street, Rochdale.

The Open Day is just one of several events and activities which will take place this year to promote the good practice in services for carers in Rochdale.
