Final Count Down to Smoke Freedom

Date published: 04/11/2005

In two months time smoking on Primary Care Trust (PCT) owned and operated premises will be banned to create completely smoke free buildings come New Year.

From 1 January 2006 no one will be able to smoke on premises, at entrances, exits and associated grounds, including car parks owned or operated by the PCT.

All PCT staff will be forbidden from smoking whilst on duty wherever they are and whenever they can be identified as NHS staff.

A new Smoke Free Policy has been developed to protect PCT employees against the fatal effects of second hand smoke and help is on hand to assist smokers in quitting.

Rochdale Stop Smoking Service can offer support and encouragement as well as nicotine replacement therapy for all PCT staff that are experiencing trouble handling their cigarette cravings. Alternatively contact your GP.

The Policy prohibits smoking in PCT vehicles and leased cars and will apply to situations when private cars are being used for business purposes and are carrying a passenger.

PCT employees will be spared inhaling toxic smoke fumes when they do home visits as patients and clients will be notified, in writing wherever possible, prior to visits that the Trust operates a smoke free policy and politely requests that they refrain from smoking during visits.

Health Professionals are crossing off dates on their calendars to mark the count down until Rochdale PCT becomes smoke free.

The policy has been welcomed by Dr Sheila Will, Director of Public Health who said; “What better way to move towards a smoke free borough than to start with our health services. The NHS and its employees are hoping to lead by example to create a healthier and safer environment for the benefit of all our employees, patients and visitors.

“The New Year will mean a new start for many people and maybe this year the policy will inspire more people to kick the habit”

Lisa Barker, Smoke Free Project Leader added; “It is estimated that environmental tobacco smoke in the workplace generally causes over 600 deaths each year in the UK.  These deaths could be completely prevented by making all indoor public places and workplaces smoke free. A further approx. 11,000 people in the UK every year die from exposure to second hand smoke in the home. The deaths caused by second hand smoke are in addition to the 106,000 deaths caused in the UK each year by smoking.

“The PCT is setting a good example to other employers by making its premises, entrances, exits and associated grounds completely smoke free.”
