Extraordinary response to Manchester Fire and Rescue Service recruitment campaign
Date published: 23/03/2006
The first recruitment campaign launched by Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service in three years has been an outstanding success. The 13 day campaign (1 to 13 March 2006) resulted in over 8,000 expressions of interest. One of the methods of expressing an interest was by specially designed micro site, which had 60% of the expressions registered on it.
The campaign entitled, "On average, we're extraordinary" described the modern role of a firefighter and focused on the diverse nature of the job and the qualities needed to carry out the role - extraordinary qualities possessed by ordinary people.
The Service is likely to recruit up to 120 firefighters and following random selection 3000 people will receive application forms with the process being over seen by ACAS. Following evaluation of forms, those selected will be invited to attend to complete a number of written tests. Those who complete these successfully will be invited to attend a series of physical tests to determine fitness, dexterity, strength and confidence in simulated situations. Those who complete the previous stages successfully will then have an interview and undergo a medical. Job offers will be subject to criminal record checks and references. These tests will take place within a couple of months, with a view to having recruits trained and ready for operational duties before the end of the year.
County Fire Officer Barry Dixon said, "This extraordinary response highlights the esteem that the public hold the role of a Firefighter in. It is an extraordinary job and I am proud that so many people want to be a part of this exemplary service. Those who are successful and join us as Firefighters have the opportunity to save lives, make a real difference in our communities and join what I truly believe is a great Service."
