Hospice to Hospice World Cup Walk
Date published: 10/05/2006
Fundraising teams at Springhill Hospice, Rochdale, and Dr Kershaw's Hospice, Royton, have joined together to devise the first Hospice to Hospice sponsored walk, which, as it will take place the day after England’s first game in this year’s World Cup, has been titled the ‘World Cup Walk’.
Ian Jenkins, Fundraising Manager at Springhill, said: “I was in conversation earlier this year with my fundraising colleague, Brian Hurst at Dr Kershaw’s, and suggested that we should do something jointly to help raise funds for our two hospices. As we are so geographically close to each other, a sponsored walk between the two sites seemed obvious – I’m surprised we’ve never thought of it before!”
Mr Jenkins went on to say: “We are asking all participants to wear their favourite football shirts on the walk – it doesn’t matter whether it’s England, Dale or Latics, we just want to add a splash of colour to the day. And let’s hope we are celebrating an England win from the night before!”
The walk, which takes place on Sunday 11 June, takes a circular route and covers a total of just over 7 miles, starting at either hospice at 10.30am and stopping at the other hospice for refreshments at the half way stage. Participants will need to register their wish to enter beforehand with Springhill Hospice Fundraising Office on 01706 711144, after which they will receive their official sponsor form and route map.
Registration is £3.00 with a requested minimum pledge of £10 per walker, and there will be a prize for the individual who raises the most sponsor money.
