Early indications are that GCSE results in the Borough matched the record level achieved last year. The provisional results show that 49% of 16-year-olds gained five or more A*-C grades and it is likely that the final results will even surpass last year’s level.
The Council’s Education Portfolio holder, Councillor David Clayton, welcomed the results, saying: "These results build upon the outstanding progress at Key Stage 4 in recent years.
"It means that more pupils than ever before can access and benefit from higher level education and training opportunities. It reflects the hard work and dedication of pupils, parents, schools and support staff. They can all take real pride in what they have achieved.
"The Council continues to make education a key priority. Yet again results show that the educational standards in Rochdale continue to improve and we are committed to maintaining and accelerating that progress."
Meanwhile, the Borough’s primary schools have again made excellent progress in English, mathematics and science according to the Key Stage 2 results published this week.
Building on the outstanding results achieved last year, when the Borough was named most improved authority in the country, results are up four per cent in English, three per cent in mathematics and four in science.
Overall, across the three subjects, the rate of progress is five times the national rate.
The results this year mean that 79% of pupils achieved Level 4 or above in English, 76% in mathematics and 87% in science, matching national averages in all core subjects.
Sue Brown, Head of Schools Service said: "Once again this is very pleasing news and credit must go to the teachers and support staff whose continuing hard work and dedication have resulted in these fine achievements.
"The results also demonstrate the important contribution that parents can make through their support for the work of schools."
Councillor Clayton said: "The Key Stage 2 results represent a new high for the Borough and performance is now in line with the national average in all core subjects.
"Increasing educational achievement remains a high priority for the Council and these results are evidence of positive partnership working between schools and a range of school support services."
