Lib Dems to appeal Standards Board decision!

The Liberal Democrats are to challenge the recent decision of the Standards Board that Councillor Robin Parker has no case to answer, following allegations by the Liberal Democrats that the Mayor had acted improperly.

Commenting on the appeal, Rochdale MP Paul Rowen said: “I am surprised and disappointed by this decision. In all my 25 years of active public life, I have never been so appalled by the behaviour of any Council Member. We will be exercising our right of appeal and are confident when they actually look at the facts they will come to a different conclusion.”

The Lib Dems have confirmed that their protest will not affect any of the Mayoral Charities.

Council Leader Alan Taylor said: “I fully back the appeal as it’s high time these scurrilous antics from bitter politicians were eradicated.

"I must make it clear though that despite our differences with Councillor Parker, we will be fully backing his nominated charities. At the end of the day, Councillor Parker’s behaviour is not their fault and we will be fully supportive and making our own efforts to contribute to them in any way we can.

"That said, I cannot pretend that we are not disappointed with the Standard’s Board decision. Let’s be clear that Councillor Parker abused his position and clout in order to seek disciplinary action against a fellow, albeit opposition, councillor.

"This has nothing to do with his position as Mayor but everything to do with his disgraceful conduct. His behaviour should be rightly castigated and we will be pushing these points.”
