Excitement and Prizes

I find my job exciting! I am well aware that not many people can say that about their jobs, and am always appreciative that I am in a position to move things forward for the benefit of the people of the Borough.
The judges have already made their decision for the Rochdale Online Awards and I have no idea of the result, even MI5 couldn’t find out its such a closely guarded secret. I am not pitching for an award but just thinking back over the last few weeks and what has been decide at Cabinet and Council.
My job as Portfolio Holder for Townships and Corporate Management (I don’t think anyone has a longer title) is seen as a backroom job, but I have been able to take a leading part in major changes to the way Rochdale MBC serves its customers, the people of the Borough.
Devolution of decision making and Budgets to Townships, giving local people control over their own local services will be rolled out over the next municipal year, and will fulfil one of the Liberal Democrat Manifesto pledges of 2006.
The introduction of a “Peoples Champion”, another manifesto pledge, to fight the corner for local people when they come up against a bureaucratic brick wall, will not only help that person, but also inform the rest of the Council’s services if better methods of working are found to need to be put in place as a result of the “Peoples Champion’s” investigation.
Members of the opposition parties, stuck in the past as they are, cannot see that Rochdale MBC is taking a lead nationally on both issues, and making great strides towards becoming an “Excellent” Council. The Liberal Democrat administration has released the shackles placed on officers by the old style previous administration and we are now beginning to fly!
Our achievement of 3 Star Rating is great news and our officers deserve tremendous praise.
We have much to do (I have to win an election) and I am a keen and excited by the future opportunities that will shape the future of the Borough, making everyone living here more prosperous, better educated, and healthier is no small task, but a wonderful prize in prospect.
No, not the Rochdale Online Awards prize! It is so good, though, that all 300 seats have been sold already, or may be everyone is coming to listen to that very good singer who is appearing. Who knows?
