Applaud our postal voters

The 2007 Local Election really gets underway this coming week with postal vote forms being sent out from the Town Hall to those people that have requested a form.

I am one of those who would like voting to be compulsory and of course proportional - it is the real way to be democratic.  Yes, I am looking forward to, and will accept under the first past the post system, a Liberal Democrat majority of seats in the new Rochdale Borough Council.  All should be disappointed though, that year after year, despite efforts to stop the decline, fewer and fewer people bother to vote.

That is why I want to say thank you to those people who have taken the time and trouble to register for a postal vote.  Whoever you vote for, and I hope it is for a Liberal Democrat Candidate, you are ensuring you take part in the democratic process.

You are demonstrating that you care about your community, the environment, the education and well-being of the borough’s children and young people, the welfare of the elderly, and all those other services the council provide to protect the borough’s resident.

Please accept my thanks for ensuring your vote is recorded and the effort you have made to do so.
