People Power Triumphs!

The good news came last week that Countryside Properties have withdrawn from a joint application to create 600 homes and a business park on the old Turner Brothers Site. As Jason Addy, co-ordinator of the Save Spodden Valley campaign, said “This is a chance to put an end to a hare-brained housing scheme and replace it with something that respects the site’s history and the real concerns over contamination”.

I’m very proud to be a part of the Save Spodden Valley campaign and I know it has the full support of our MP, Paul Rowen. The campaign is a great example of what we can achieve when a community works together, even in the face of a sustained corporate campaign by MMC Estates and Countryside Properties. Jason Addy and many other local residents have done a great job.

The Campaign doesn’t end here though. I totally support ongoing efforts to make the whole of the site permanently safe for the people of Rochdale. MMC Estates are now the sole applicants for this ridiculous planning application and if anybody from MMC Estates is reading this then I warn them “don’t underestimate the people power of Rochdalians!”
