Spotland’s Heritage Trail

The recent fire at the Alexander Drew Mill site in Spotland has highlighted the industrial heritage in Rochdale and Spotland in particular. I’ve been investigating the route down from Turners to Spotland Bridge, once the heart of Rochdale’s industry. It’s a great route but much more could be done with the trail. My dream would be to create a corridor from Healey Dell to the town centre along the river! Perhaps it could be a conservation area and heritage trail. It could highlight our industrial past and be another spot for healthy exercise. I’m sure government funds would be available.

I urge everyone to go and take a look. Starting at the Scout Hut at Spotland Bridge you can see the steep steps on the right that were once used by local Mill workers. These steps are similar to the ones that take you from St Chad’s into the Town Centre and, if renovated, would provide one extra link from Spotland into Falinge. Further up is the iron footbridge, taking you across the river. All the way along you will find beautiful stonework, secret tunnels, roads and steps now hidden in the undergrowth. I’m sure we could make better use of this little known part of Spotland.
