Susan, correct me if I am wrong (I'm sure you will) was it not a joint venture with ALL 3 PARTIES who voted at a council meeting for the alternate weekly collections, and yes you were there with your hand up at the vote.
As a councillor that has been part of the alternate weekly collections since the beguining and the green champion for the Pennines I state that yes we do have some minor problems which do get sorted,
Fact:there have been approx 20 cases of maggots in bins reported in all cases officers went to visit and explained how to avoid the situation. Not bad odds when you consider the size of the Pennines ard a few areas that were atrached to it for the alternate weekly collection
Fact: there have been no increase of rats since the alternate collections started.
The problems I have encounted are with the bag system, this has now been/is being rectified with the split wagons that collect all items together so that the bags are not left lying about or being blown about by the wind, We are now begining to collect pulpables (paper, cards, Tetra packs, etc) together this will mean fewer bags.
If anyone finds that their bins are too big , smaller bins can be requested by calling the help line.
Bolton's recycling rate has dropped since it reintroduced the weekly risidual bin collection.
Stockport's recycling rate is one of the highest this is mainly due to the fact that their recycling of garden waste is higher but they do not collect plastics (yet).
All 9 Councils who make up the Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority are aware of how much it will cost if we do not recycle, the landfil charges that will be incured (thanks to the Labour Government) are astronomical and would mean that Council Tax rises to pay for it.
So Susan stop shouting about it, if you want to have a more hands on approach, put yourself forward as the green champion of your Township and attend the meetings, but whatever you decide, give it fair go.
ALTERNATE WEEKLY COLLECTIONS ARE WORKING.
Labour are very good at using SCAREMONGERING tactics.
Just a thought maybe you should visit the waste centre at Sharston where some of Manchester's rubbish gets sent and sorted to go to land fill that would open your eyes to the problems.
Land fill is expensive.
Landfilling is unhygenic.
Land that is filled with rubbish is no use to any one for years as it cannot be built on.
We are rapidly running out of land in which to fill with rubbish.
