Last Sunday we remembered again all who have fought, suffered and died for the freedom we all enjoy today.

We all owe a great debt of gratitude to the courage and bravery of Her Majesty’s Armed Forces who still strive for peace throughout the world.

I always feel it is a great honour to lay the wreath at the Cenotaph in Rochdale on behalf of the Council Conservative Group, and then in the afternoon to attend the Remembrance Service in my own ward of Wardle and West Littleborough.

Once again it was wonderful to see so many people attending and taking part in the services. It’s especially good that so many young people are present either involved in uniformed organisations or playing in the band, and I know in Wardle we are especially grateful to the band from Wardle High School that play so well in the long march from the top of the village to the Cenotaph and back again !

During last week members and supporters of the Royal British Legion were very busy with their ‘Poppy Appeal’. The Royal British Legion is such an important charity in providing funds for those in need due to the consequences of war and I gave a little of my spare time to help with the collection. There I witnessed the tireless efforts of the volunteers standing in draughty shopping centres and supermarket entrances helping with the collections, and also saw the great generosity of the Rochdale people who gave so willingly to this worthwhile cause.

We are very fortunate to live in a town that has so many volunteers and such generous people.
