Yesterday, I had the pleasure (as a governor of Newlands school) of attending the opening of the new schools with Jim Dobbin M.P. This was nothing to do with the official opening of the six new schools planned for later this month at the Redwood/Oulder Hill site, this was for the people who really matter- the pupils and staff of the 2 schools. The day began with the children and staff arriving in fancy dress and what a great variety of outfits there were. Fairies, pirates, clowns etc. I think my favourite was the red indian squaw who had a placard on her back proclaiming "too many chiefs and not enough indians". A sentiment we can all agree with at times. There was a balloon launch and creative workshops with the theatre company Shabang who were excellent and so energetic. Pudsey bear was also in attendance and a collection was held for Children in Need. All the children came together in the hall for a thoroughly enjoyable concert the opening ribbon was cut by Diane King from Excellence in Cities and there was cake and refreshments for all. All the children had lovely smiles on their faces and went home very happy but tired after a fun packed day. All the staff have gone through quite a traumatic last two or three years since the new schools were first suggested and it is a great credit to them that they wanted to mark the joint opening with such a tremendous party. Thank you to all concerned for a really wonderful time. I am sure the children will have happy memories for years to come.
