Allen Brett's retirement!

It is entirely predictable following our change in the Cabinet that the usual cast list of Labour Members would appear with their version of doom and gloom - masquerading as ‘concerned’ members of the ‘public’. These people all have a common theme - they write to a local paper to attack the Liberal Democrats. At least Phil Bethell admits that it was under the Liberal Democrats – that ‘Council Tax was pegged back to the lowest increase for 11 years.’ It just goes to show that the Liberal Democrats are taking seriously the problem of rising Council Tax bills. When last led by Labour, this Council imposed the highest increase for many years.
These people all have one theme in common – they claim that there are deep divisions within our party. Yes, there are disagreements – that is the nature of politics. Every single Liberal Democrat Councillor and Paul Rowen MP has the best interests of the people of Rochdale at heart. That is why they campaign so hard on things like losing vital services at Rochdale Infirmary, to save our Post Offices, to improve education at all levels and much more.
In the light of Allen Brett’s imminent departure from this Council – I am intrigued to see Heywood Councillor Colin Lambert’s recent letter to the press kick-starting his campaign to succeed him as Labour Leader. Why else would he write making false claims to a paper his Constituents won’t even see? I know for a fact that Colin Lambert wants to be the next Labour Leader and is using your Letter’s Page to appeal to Labour Councillors. Maybe he could send a copy of this paper to Labour Councillor David Murphy who has moved to Spain – despite claiming £10,000 of tax payer’s money.
His claims are misleading you on many issues affecting people on this Council. He claims that the Lib Dems ‘flip from one mess to another’. The Labour group don’t even know what country their Councillors live in – never mind issues of importance to the people of this Borough.
