Arts, Emails and Trouble at t’Mil…kstone

I read with interest the debate regarding an Arts Centre for Rochdale. As a former portfolio holder for Leisure I would, of course, welcome any such development but I seriously wonder where the money would come from. In Middleton we struck lucky. We had the need for a serious retail supermarket (you’ll never hear me use that idiotic Whitehall invention ‘offer’) and in came Tesco to buy up all the old town centre leisure sites and build us a brand new Arena as part of the deal. Rochdale is not in that position and I cannot honestly see, after Touchstones, that they could expect any more Lottery funding. Added to that there is the Gracie, out of town though it may be and stuck on to a school. So I read the thoughts of Mulgrew and Hennigan with interest. I actually believe that Dale means what he says, but he’s comparatively new, naive and not totally aware of the game. I wouldn’t believe Hennigan if he told me snow was white. And then there’s Alan Taylor who has allegedly said that there is not the demand. Yeah, Alan.
Well, it wasn’t me that released the email from Elwyn Watkin, but I’m glad somebody did. As they say, the truth will out. For me, it’s got Standards Board written all over it. As for Hennigan’s comments: “The fact that someone chose to leak it to the media is mischievous and an attempt to cause racial tension in order to score political points”, what a despicable hypocrite that man is. If, heaven forbid, one of the Labour Group had written something as bad as that Hennigan would have had it in the Nationals by now.
Fascinating rumours surrounding the Liberal Democrats in Milkstone and Deeplish. Shafiq is at the risk of deselection. If that happens, he will stand independent. If he is reselected, the other guy will stand as independent. And Shafiq is said to be using his clout to say that if he is deselected Rowen has no chance at the General. All this on the back of the excellent victory by Labour’s Imtiaz Ahmed last May. What is truth? Trouble at t’Mil.
