Another night of shame for the Lib Dems

Last night saw the Lib Dems once again drive a coach and horses through the notion that they are supporters of democracy. To railroad proposals through for a golf driving range at Springfield Park simply beggars belief.

Let’s briefly look at the facts. The portfolio holder for the environment is against this move. So is the town’s MP. So is Rochdale’s Labour Parliamentary Candidate. So are the Conservatives. And so is the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport who offered the view that this would never happen in his constituency.

And, of course, the vast majority of public opinion is also dead set against it.
So how on earth can the Lib Dems justify forcing this through to sacrifice an important green space that is used by all kinds of people across the Borough simply for narrow commercial interests? Quite simply they can’t. That’s why you had the deeply unedifying spectacle of the Lib Dems shouting at each other while their own members angrily told Cllr Wera Hobhouse to shut up. I’m beginning to think the Lib Dems are becoming more and more detatched from their role as public servants and are turning into shameful little dictators.

Elsewhere, I see standards in the Lib Dems are sinking lower than I possibly imagined. Councillor Peter Rush is Chair of the Employment Committee so you would imagine he is very busy tackling real problems in the current economic climate. Not according to his latest councillor diary. In it he admits that “probably the hardest decision I have taken this year” was choosing the winning Christmas card at his local primary school.

On the subject of schools, I’ve been particularly impressed with the work carried out at Kentmere Primary School in helping set up a school council. Two of my nieces (Ishara Khan, aged six, and Yackza Tariq, nine) have been elected to the school council and are already looking to try and make a difference in their community. I’m proud of the girls and it’s great to see them so interested in community work at such a young age.
