Wishing you all a merry Christmas

I would like to wish everyone in Rochdale a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year.
At this time of year my thoughts are with those who have lost their jobs or are separated from their loved ones. I hope 2009 brings you better fortunes and fresh opportunities.
For me, 2008 has been an interesting year. I decided to go back into education at the age of 32 and haven’t looked back. I’ve also thoroughly enjoyed serving as a Councillor and working hard with local residents to get better facilities and improve our area. Rochdale faces many challenges and I’m encouraged by the commitment of people in the local Labour Party to finding solutions to help our town come through the recession. Building up our public infrastructure and safeguarding jobs, as well as working hard to create new employment opportunities, are the major tasks for 2009.
I was also lucky to be able to travel to Palestine on a study visit earlier this year and meet up with the Mayor of Nazareth. I imagine he is very busy right now as he and his colleagues are preparing for over 60,000 Christian visitors this Christmas. These pilgrims will be visiting holy sights and participating in religious services in the region. I hope events there and in Rochdale pass peacefully and the people enjoy a restful and reflective Christmas.
I am looking forward to the break. Enjoy the festive spirit and best wishes for 2009.
