Where’s our arts centre gone?

This week I was delighted to hear of an excellent new Government initiative, which will see free theatre tickets given out to under 26-year-olds. In the same way the Labour Party has opened up access to our museums and galleries and committed to free swimming for all by 2012, they are now extending this principal to the performing arts. This is great news for our young people and I would urge anyone in Rochdale under the age of 26 to visit the website www.anightlessordinary.org.uk to get their free tickets.

I’ve already been on the site and I couldn’t help but feel frustrated to see that Rochdale is not on the list. Looking at the nearest participating theatres I see that youngsters can get free theatre tickets in Oldham, Bolton and Bury. Why is it that we don’t have a participating arts centre to rival those on offer in our neighbouring towns? After all, the Lib Dems have been promising one for years. But as with most things they’ve failed to deliver. This is another Lib Dem failure and its time they were held accountable for their empty promises.
