Spirit

Wind and rain whistling down the Esplanade at 11 o’clock on Saturday morning couldn’t dampen the spirit and camaraderie evident on the faces of the Service veterans, as they stood to attention at the Cenotaph, in remembrance of all those that fell in and around the beaches of Normandy on D-Day, June 6th, 1944.

All branches of the Armed Forces seemed to be represented, along with the Police. Many local people, including several of us Councillors swelled the ranks.
Prayers were read and the many Standards were raised and lowered as the Last Post was played.
I always feel very humbled, but also very proud, at these occasions. Having never served in the Forces I can’t even begin to imagine the thoughts and memories of those brave men that were stood in front us.

I will never forget their sacrifice.

I would like to thank my friends Cyril and Doreen Watts for the part they played in organising this event.
