Some enjoyable duties

The last few days I have had some enjoyable duties. On Sunday I attended the opening of the community garden at Cherwell Close sheltered housing complex by Jim Dobbin M.P. This garden has provided a splash of colour for the enjoyment of the residents, and we were treated to a lively rendition of popular music played by the excellent Rochdale Youth band, who remained cheerful and smiling despite the difficult weather conditions which saw their music whipped away by the wind or soaked by the intermittent rain showers. Residents and guests began the afternoon outside in glorious sunshine, but soon had to move indoors and enjoyed the music through open windows. I was lucky to win some prizes on the Tombola, and we all enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea. Earlier I had called to collect a raffle prize which I had won with a ticket bought at Heywood Magic Market in aid of the St. Lukes Scout hut appeal. Yesterday, I attended a Womens Day celebration at Hollin E.M.B. along with our beat manager Sergeant Tracey Lowe and many lady residents of the estate. The health trainers were in attendance providing healthy smoothies and took blood pressures, there was also the chance for ladies to have their bone density measured to give an early indication of osteoporosis. The E.M.B staff had provided a delicious selection of healthy dips and dunks along with an array of bite sized chunks of fresh fruit. Everyone left with arms full of free samples of potions and lotions to refresh, invigorate and beautify. Thanks to Sharon, Cheryl and Lois for all their hard work in preparing for such a successful day. Finally, I went to Middleton Arena to meet the Bishop of Manchester on the Middleton leg of his tour of the parishes which make up the boundaries of the Diocese. He is a charming man with great good humour, and obviously takes a great interest in local political matters. These events made a welcome change from the usual round of council meetings and are a chance to meet local people in a more informal way.
