Ruby Anniversary

Yesterday Chris and I celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary, I cant believe we have been happily married for so long. Our 4 wonderful daughters had treated us to a lovely holiday on Jersey which we thoroughly enjoyed and last night we took them along with their husbands and our 3 grandchildren for a meal at Il Vecchio in Heywood. I can totally recommend the venue where nothiong was too much trouble and every course was mouthwateringly delicious. Now back to reality, it was interesting to learn that the States of Jersey need to make savings of £50.000 this financial year, exactly the same amount as Rochdale. They have started by cutting free school milk which Jersey dairies say will mean that their prices will have to go up. The next cut is to stop free school trips to the amazing Durrell zoo. This will have a disastrous effect on their worldwide conservation programme and threatened species may well be lost as a result. At the same time they have signed a contract for a French/German consortium to build a huge recycling plant. They have built it on top of a hill very  close to St Hellier and a huge blot on the beautiful landscape which will now have to be concealed by an earth bund and planted with trees to screen it. To make matters worse the officers forgot to build any safeguards into the contract for variations in the rate of exchange and that has cost them dear. It seems cock ups are not just a local institution. It was interesting to hear the local people moaning about their politicians even though they do not have any political parties as such. Some things never change. If Jersey is one of those places you have meant to visit but never got round to it, make the effort its a wonderful island with very friendly people and lots of interesting places to visit. We deliberately didnt go to all the sights so that we have a good excuse to go again. Hopefully, I will not have to wait another 40 years to go.
