Extraordinary Full Council meeting

It was such a pleasure at full Council on Wednesday, to witness members from all political persuasions come together to congratulate Councillor Susan Emmott as she received a framed long service certificate for 25 years continuous service as a ward Councillor. In fact Susan briefly lost her seat in the 80s, and has actually been a Councillor for 27 years in total, and all with the Labour party. Susan has held many positions in Council over the years including Mayor of Rochdale and always done justice to every role. As a fellow ward Councillor I have always been astounded by her long and accurate memory, as well as by her stamina (she still works full time in the last mill in Heywood). She was justly proud of being honoured and if anyone wants to write a history of politics in the borough then Susan would be a fount of knowledge to tap into. Susan went into politics to make a difference for working class people and she has always strived to do that. She can remember when full Council went on until the early hours of the morning, and knows just how important it was that the meetings became more structured and had a time limit. Some newer members who have complained that the meetings are "pointless" and prefer to use the time to "twitter" should learn from Susans example and perhaps do some research into why things are done the way they are in the borough. So well done Susan you deserve it and have a very good birthday party on Saturday!
