Heywood & Middleton - General Election 2017

Liberal Democrat Party
Heywood & Middleton Constituency

I am pleased to have been selected as the Liberal Democrat Candidate for Heywood and Middleton.

By profession, I'm an academic neuroscientist and have also spent approaching seven years in business as a medical writer. That's why I am so passionate about defending our NHS. I am pleased to back proper funding for our NHS and social care. Our National Health Service is on the brink of collapse and Theresa May doesn’t care. Neither would it seem is Labour and Jeremy Corbyn who are providing no opposition to the Conservatives. Only the Liberal Democrats will save the NHS from crisis. We will do this by spending 1p in the pound of income tax on the NHS and social care services, prioritising mental health care and limiting care costs for the elderly.

Protecting our green belt is another priority. Our green spaces in parts of Bamford, Heywood, Norden and Middleton are under threat from Labour's bulldozers. I am proud the Liberal Democrats are the only political party united against the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework. The Conservatives recently criticised local Liberal Democrats for opposing it. We will solve our housing crisis by working with local communities and putting a plan together to develop brown field sites first.

I have previously been a councillor and I know what a privilege it is to represent people. That's why I was appalled at local Labour councillors giving themselves a 34% pay rise. They were supported by the Conservatives in places like Bamford, Norden and Middleton. Labour MP Liz McInnes did nothing to rein her greedy councillors in. They did this because they thought there would be no elections this year. Now you have a chance to have your say.

I will be a champion for equality in education. Conservative school cuts mean that children’s chances are too often determined by their parents’ income. Liberal Democrats will support young people in Bamford, Heywood, Middleton and Norden by investing an extra £7.5bn in education, by opposing new grammar schools, and by ensuring that per-pupil budgets grow if class sizes do.

If elected, I will be the strong voice that the Heywood and Middleton constituency needs and deserves.
