Local Election 2010

Mervyn Clive Simpson

Labour Party
North Heywood Ward

I live on Elizabeth Street, Heywood. I am standing for Heywood with an agenda for putting Heywood first.

I joined the New Deal "Heart for Heywood" project seven year ago as a resident director and have served as a volunteer for many years on local committees. I would like to take that experience gained to get positive things done for Heywood.

I formed a small company in 1984, Provincial Tree Services Ltd after gaining a Royal Forestry certificate studying part time whilst working full time. Since that time I have also successfully gained a BSc(Hons) from UCLAN and status of Chartered Arborculturist MICFor from Edinburgh's Institute of Chartered Foresters.

I have a great concern for the environment and PTS Ltd became the first company in the North West to purchase a tree shredder for recycling green waste material.

I believe Heywood should have their own council services again and that we should control locally how our council taxes are spent.

As a volunteer with New Deal, I helped to deliver many successful projects in Heywood including : The new Joint Services Centre (The Pheonix Centre). the New Sports Village, The Business Incubation Centre in the old police station (TOPS) Woodland School, Surestart Nursery and many other schemes for the people of Heywood.

Initally I became interested in community projects because on my street, Elizabeth Street that is central in Heywood, the residents received no help for an alley gate, furthermore we have no grid that functions and all surface water forms a small lake whenever it rains.

I don't believe its unreasonable to expect a better service from my council representatives.

I would like the devolution of local powers back into the hands of Heywood people who care.
