On 1 May I will be standing to help bring you better facilities and make Smallbridge and Firgrove a cleaner and safer place.

Above all, what our area needs is a councillor that will work hard to try and restore some local pride. This is what I intend to do. Having lived locally for over 20 years, I know what the problems are. I am a mother that speaks four languages, helps children with reading and writing skills at Kentmere Primary School and am involved in many community activities.

When I look at how our area has changed under the Lib Dems, the most visibly depressing reminder of how we have been neglected is the fact that fly tippers are ruining our environment. Places where my children used to go and play are now strewn with rubbish and are not safe. Parts of our ward used to be so tranquil, beautiful and clean. Now there are mattresses, trolleys and all sorts of rubbish blighting our beauty spots.

Our Liberal Democrat run council have made just one prosecution for fly tipping in the past year and it’s time we got tough on people who dump rubbish without any concern for our environment.

I know many hard working families who want a safer and more supportive place for their children to grow up and I am pleased that the local Labour Group are working hard to achieve this.

In the last few weeks our Labour Parliamentary Candidate, Simon Danczuk, has confirmed that Andy Burnham, the Minister who he invited to Rochdale a few months back, has awarded Rochdale £2.5 million to improve play areas. I am pleased that he chose Rochdale as the only local authority in Greater Manchester to become a Play Pathfinder area and hope we can build on this progress and work hard to make our town a great place for children to grow up in.

Better children’s play areas and youth facilities will help steer young people away from crime and anti social behaviour. This will have a positive impact on the whole community.

I will also be working hard to reform the council’s disastrous fortnightly bin collections, which have created the ideal conditions for rats and maggots.

Working with you I will make our streets safer, improve adult care services so the elderly are afforded dignity, respect and proper support, get better facilities in our schools, more young people in further education and get more support for voluntary groups so we can build a stronger community together.

There are many challenges to rise to in order to help our area reach its full potential. With your vote I will strive to do this and make sure you are fairly represented with a real commitment and passion.
