What good is knowledge if you cannot use it for the greater good of mankind? I said it.

As the Liberal Democrat candidate for Hopwood Hall I sincerely believe that I have the will and energy to deliver and achieve on behalf of the local residents.

Having served 23 years in the Royal Navy, and being a veteran of the Falkland’s conflict in 1982 and the first Gulf war, I have, in my life, gained much experience of life and knowledge of working with people as a team, after all fighting a war is not a single-handed affair. I find that in order to get things done in the community one has to have that same fighting spirit to achieve common good, and a voice that can be heard above others.

This team spirit is my guiding strength to serve the people (team) of Hopwood Hall, not only that, but Heywood as a whole, because I truly believe that we have a wonderful town here and someone like myself is needed to shout above the rest to get what we deserve. Often Rochdale gets all and we are left holding the shards. I want to change that and fight to get the same or better for Heywood.

The Government are closing our post offices by the droves, I want to fight for the right of the people Hopwood Hall to keep their local post offices open. The Liberal Democrats are the party which has the needs and wants of the community close to its heart and the will to deliver them.

Hopwood has its fair share of problems, high crime rate, flooding in the recent heavy rains and even dog-fouling seems to be high up on the agenda having spoken with the local residents.

Your Local Lib Dems are putting into place policies to tackle all of these issues head on. We are bringing in extra police in each borough to tackle crime and keeping our local police stations open for longer. In 2008/2009 we are carrying out major “gully cleaning” to alleviate the flooding problems and putting the money in to clean our streets.

Hopwood is the “corridor” into the Heart of Heywood which needs to be cleaned up and improved and I want to campaign to achieve that improvement and around the Heywood station. We need to have a train station that one feels proud of, and of course campaign hard to get us connected to the main line.

I am 52 years old and have lived and worked in Heywood since my retirement 12 years ago. Majority of you have known me as the owner of Tandoori Nights restaurant and of course the inventor of the “Curryoke” phenomenon which became so popular that even Emmerdale used the idea, but that’s not what I want to sing and dance about.

What I would like to sing and dance about is the opportunity that the people of Hopwood Hall are giving me to serve for them as their local councillor. I have proven again and again my ability to innovate. Please allow me the chance to prove to you, in Hopwood, that I really can deliver your promises.

On 1 May you should get crossed with me! and put that X against my name, Harry Boota as your local Councillor.
