I've been around a long time in the Labour Party, but as a Local Government employee I was unable to stand for election until I retired. I am pleased now to be standing for election in South Middleton where I have lived for over twenty years.

Each candidate brings their own experience, personal and professional, to the role of candidate and hopefully Councillor.

So here goes with some of mine.

I am a parent who has brought up (jointly) three children all of whom went to local schools. We have good schools in Middleton and parents, school staff and governors must keep it that way and improve where possible.

I am a governor of two local schools and in my view schools now need continuing effective support from the Local Education Authority (LEA) and a period of stability.

Young people are not a problem, most go to school, do their best and have fun. Some are responsible for criminal and anti social behaviour and some of that has roots in things such as alcohol abuse.

Providing good facilities for young people and children will be a priority for me, as will continuing the battle against crime and anti social behaviour.

I am a keen supporter of junior football, were we need better pitches. We also need to recognise the great work done by coaches in this and other sports, usually as volunteers.

I have been a volunteer, and in particular have worked with a charity for disabled people. As a Councillor I would hope to use my experience to support disabled people.

By trade I was a solicitor, working in a private firm and then local government.

A long standing environmentalist I know we need to do better, which is not just about recycling, but efficient attractive buildings, clean safe roads, better energy use.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.
