Labour Party
Milkstone & Deeplish Ward

I have been selected by the Labour Party to stand as a prospective candidate for Milkstone and Deeplish wards at the local council elections to be held on 5th May 2011.

I am a resident in the Milkstone & Deeplish ward and have lived here with my family for nearly 36 years. During this time I have been an active member of the local community. This has included:-

  • The development of the Star Youth Group in 1981
  • The establishment of Deeplish Community centre in the 80’s
  • Being a member of the management committee(s) of KYP, SAFARA, Deeplish community centre and the former Rochdale Racial Equality Council
  • A member of the governing bodies of local schools including Deeplish and former Balderstone and Broadfield schools
  • Established the SAFAR mother tongue project
  • Re-starting the Sudden Community Centre

I have also worked in local government for over 25 years. This has included:-

  • Co-ordination/management role at Bury Council;
  • Part-time Youth Worker with Rochdale Council. Through this work I have run numerous youth clubs and supported/developed many many local youth in their education, employment and personal development.
  • Teaching role with Hopwood Hall College, delivering professional training linked to the interpretation and translation industry.

I have also been a trainer and mentor to many local youths with most of these securing full-time employments within Rochdale, Oldham and Greater Manchester. Some of these local youths are currently working as youth workers within Rochdale Council.

As part of my strong commitment to local community development and empowerment I have also been involved in starting various cultural initiatives, arranging local/international youth exchanges and study visits including a recent visit European Head quarters in Brussels in March 2011. My aim has been to widen the life experiences of our local youth, families and professionals and share/develop new ways of working to improve our local communities.

As a result of active role within the community, my employment experience within local authorities and involvement in various committees/boards I have a very good understanding of the local issues/challenges, experience of supporting local people and have the ability to get things done.

I truly believe that, based upon my wide ranging skills, knowledge and community/ employment experience, If elected I will do my level best to help the residents of Milkstone and Deeplish during these very difficult and challenging times.

I have been doing a lot of work and providing support to our residents in my voluntary capacity and I now look forward to an opportunity to serve my community a Councillor.
