Local Election 2014

Robert Clegg

Robert Clegg

Conservative Party
Wardle & West L'boro Ward

Despite all the negative publicity the town has received recently, I remain a proud Rochdalian.

I was born here, educated here, lived here all my life, for the last thirty years in Wardle and West Littleborough, and worked here for much of my career in the NHS, latterly as the Chief Executive of the Rochdale Healthcare NHS Trust. Both my children, having been away at university, have returned to live in the Borough to raise their families (two grandchildren and a third due any day now) because the Pennines Township is still a great place to live.

I have been privileged to represent the ward on council for the last ten years and have worked hard alongside my fellow ward councillors to put the interests of Wardle and West Littleborough first. We have held four surgeries a month and have been readily available to deal with case work.

I have a near perfect attendance record at meetings and in my time on council have served in many capacities including Portfolio holder for Finance and more recently Adult Care, Chair of Planning, Chair of the Overview and Scrutiny Committee and Vice-chair of the Employment Committee.

Over the next two years the council has to make a further £51m savings and this will call for some really difficult decisions so that residents’ priorities and my priorities for good schools, a safe and clean environment as well as children’s and adult care services ensuring that the most vulnerable are well looked after, are all maintained. Given my background and experience I believe I can make a valuable contribution to that decision making process.

Outside of council life I am proud to be involved in the success of a number of significant organisations in the Borough. Springhill Hospice celebrates twenty-five years of service this year and I have served as a Trustee on the Board for all of that time and for the last few years have been the Chair. Similarly I chair the corporation at Hopwood Hall College which has recently been recognised as the best performing vocational college in Greater Manchester and now stands in the top twenty nationally. I am also a director of the Littleborough Coach House Trust and a Governor at St James’ Primary School, Wardle.

So, when you go to vote on the 22 May I hope you will look at my record and vote for me. Thank you.
