Heywood & Middleton By-Election 2014

Abigail Louise Jackson

Abigail Louise Jackson

Green Party
Heywood & Middleton Constituency

I am standing for the Green Party as they represent the real changes we need in Heywood and Middleton; putting people first, investing in jobs, affordable housing, and high quality public services.

I was born in Middleton and attended Cardinal Langley School. I studied at the University of Huddersfield. I am proud to be a resident of Middleton and I now work in Manchester.

I used to think that all political parties were the same. But when I was at university I became really passionate about the way people were being negatively represented by politicians and the media: young people, unemployed, immigrants, whoever. So I started looking around for a political party that actually stuck up for people. I found the Green Party. I realised that their policies of fairness and social justice could bring real change in Heywood and Middleton.

If elected, I will campaign for:

  • A real change from austerity and welfare cuts to investment in decent jobs
  • A genuine living wage for all full time workers – that allows them to put food on the table and pay the bills; the poorest should not be made to pay for the mess created by the bankers
  • Welfare reform that does not hit working families through cuts to tax credits, housing benefit and child benefit; an end to the “bedroom tax”
  • A real change from privatisation for the benefit of the 1% to public management of essential services not driven by corporate greed
  • High quality public services should be there when you need them. The NHS must be kept in public hands and not sold off in bits to the private sector
  • A public transport service that is a service that considers the needs of the travelling public, rather than a business that is only about making huge profits
  • An end to subsidies for fossil fuels; an end to fracking: our air and water should not be put at risk in order that energy companies can make huge profits
  • Tackling climate change, developing renewable energy and associated skilled jobs; creating a sustainable world that we can pass on to our children
  • A fundamental review of what we as members of society should be doing to protect the vulnerable – children, the elderly, those in violent relationships. Justice for the victims of historic abuse can only come through ensuring that such abuses never happen again

Many of the securities that our parents and grandparents fought for – a functioning National Health Service, free education and affordable homes now look out of reach for most of us. Climate change is bringing unpredictable and threatening weather patterns.

People feel let down by politicians. People want to do things differently. The Green Party stands for the real change we need. Real change for today and tomorrow. Real change that will benefit you and your community.

I would be proud to represent your views in parliament.
