Heyside (Cup)
Sunday May 16th 2010
Saddleworth & District Cricket League Under 13s Cup - Round 1
Heyside 86-4 - Bamford-Fieldhouse 87-2 (Home)
For the second time in three weeks Bamford-Fieldhouse under13s played Heyside, this time it was the Cup first round with Bamford having home advantage.
It was a cold damp Sunday morning but there was an atmosphere of expectancy of a close match with the league fixture at Heyside only two weeks earlier only being decided in the final over.
Heyside won the toss and elected to bat . They lost their first wicket in the second over with score on 6, Belfield clean bowling the usually reliable Robinson for just 4. Thouey joined Price at the wicket and they both batted patiently against an accurate and pacey Bamford attack of Smith-Butler and Belfield. The second wicket went down in the seventh over with the score on 35, Thouey being caught behind by Garside off Smith-Butler for 15. This was just reward for Smith-Butler whose 4 overs only cost 11 runs.
Price started to open his shoulders and was well supported by Darlington and he retired on 31 with the score on 65. The Heyside innings lost its impetus after this, against more accurate bowling from Ahmed, Mughal and Wright and they closed on 86 for 4.
All the Bamford bowlers bowled well with the pick being Hamza Mughal who finished with figured of 4 overs, 2 maidens 2 for 6.
Heyside would have to bowl extremely well to contain the free scoring Bamford batting line up who had amassed over 420 runs in their 3 previous fixtures this season. Their first task was to try to remove one of the Bamford openers of Smith-Butler and Willis who have been getting their team off to a series of blistering starts, averaging 50 partnerships in double quick time.
The Heyside opening bowlers of Robinson & Thouey tried their best, but again the power of Smith-Butler and Willis came out on top with both batsmen retiring on 32 and 30 respectively. In the process, both batsmen passed 100 runs for the season in only their fourth innings with Willis yet to be dismissed !
With the score on 66 for 0 after 10 overs, Heyside’s total was looking far too low but they did pick up a couple of wickets, that of Ahmed and Mughal both without troubling the scorers. The dependable Matthews and Belfield saw the home team home to an 8 wicket victory with more than 5 overs to spare.
The game was played in a very sporting manner, something that the clubs respective 1st XI’s could learn a lot from! The Bamford team are looking very strong with 4 wins from 4 and confidence in the squad is high.
