Chernobyl Childrens Project (UK) West Pennine Branch

Intro

We give holidays to Belarusian children who are in remission from cancer or have other radiation related illnesses as a result of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986.

We usually bring 12 children aged between 9 and 16 for a month in July and August. They stay with volunteer host families for a fortnight then move to another family. There is 24/7 support for families from the rest of the group who are experienced host parents and from a Belarusian interpreter and doctor who accompany the children.

Group activities are planned roughly every three days so that children get to talk to each other and have fun. We have trips to the seaside, swimming, country walks, karting, water sports, ice skating and visits to historical towns, amongst many other local activities, such as Rochdale's Circus School and Pandemonium Drumming Workshop.

We fundraise throughout the year to pay for their flights (about £400 each) and for the holiday expenses, aiming to raise at least £6,000 per year.

This could be the best holiday of your life - certainly the most rewarding.

We are always looking for more host parents so that we can give more children the recuperative holiday that they desperately need.
