The Birth of Fletcher Bolton and how we came to be!
Why Fletcher Bolton? Fletcher, was the surname of his Grandmother, Hannah Fletcher. Bolton, was the family name.
Born 1807 - The third of nine children, to Warrington Potters, James & Martha. The family business had, since 1797, exported its wares to the U.S.A and had seen great prosperity. However, with the outbreak of war, Great Britain and America stopped all exports of British manufacture, the works suffered and the eventual bankruptcy caused the firm to close.
Using contacts throughout the country as members of Penketh Quakers, Fletcher's family found an alternative trade in which to place him. Rochdale was becoming a thriving mill town and Clogs were worn by most mill workers at this time. This it would seem, was the trade chosen for Fletcher.
In 1830, the business he worked so hard to learn was born. Using his shrewd business sense and quality workmanship his business benefited. So much that as a result of his earlier union to Phoebe Robinshaw, they were to have eight children. The eldest, Edwin was to follow in his fathers footsteps.
Fletcher Bolton was not slow to take advantage of opportunities made available within the developing town. One of these was the Rochdale Canal, his premises and residence were adjacent and this made the delivery of the raw materials much easier, so in 1865, a Timber Department was added.
1986 was the year when the sale of the company to "TIMBMET" (the countries largest independent hardwood importer) came about. This was to give yet another boost to the company and again expand the business. Even though "Fletcher Bolton" was now just a name, there were more changes to come.
A £1M plus expansion programme by Timbmet saw the building of a new Trade Collection Centre. Timbmet purchased properties for Fletcher Bolton's use, not only creating new, much needed offices but also an ideal showroom where new products (especially wooden flooring) could be displayed.
Having seen a large increase in flooring sales, the need for a specialised flooring centre was recognised. The newly acquired premises, was an ideal base to launch, "The Flooring Gallery". A showroom designed and dedicated to timber flooring, enabling us to show, and advise customers in all aspects of products.
Fletcher Bolton thanks the people of Rochdale!
