History
This society dates back to the War Years of the 1930s & 40s. Detailed records for the pre-1950 period connot be found, but, thanks to the late Mrs Annie Jagger, and to the late Mr. Bob Toy, a folder of Press cu/ttings (1950's onwards) has been compiled, giving a picture of a Society going from strength to strength.
In 1949, when Mr & Mrs Jagger joined, the society had just 7 members. Straightaway Annie and her husband (Norman) became Secretary and Treasurer, and membership quickly increased to about 100, with a full programme of meetings, shows and aviary visits. It wasn't unusual for 50-60 members to attend meetings. Seed, which had been very expensive just after the war (£1 for lb) gradually became cheaper.
The society met in various places, including an upstairs room in the Old Fire Station, the Red Lion in Rochdale Town Centre, and the Cloverdale Pub on Entwistle Road. In addition there were Open Shows at locations such as Lenny Barn (in a marquee).
In the early 1960s around a dozen of the memmbers split from Rochdale and formed the Littleborough Budgerigar Society, but as numbers declined, the group rejoined Rochdale, and meeting were held at the Blue Pitts Inn in Castleton. However, when all the Society's staging stored there was destroyed by fire, they changed cenue, first to Scout Hut, Greenbank and Whitworth Road, then to the Oxford Pub, and subsequently to a number of different buildings/centres around the town.
