Happy New Year everyone
December is always a busy month for all members of Middleton Rotary Club. It is the time when we take Father Christmas on his sleigh around the streets of Middleton to collect for local charities and community groups.
The children’s faces brighten up when they see Santa riding by on his sleigh and many adults also come out to wave to Father Christmas.
For those helping with collecting, the Christmas music, along with seeing the joy and happiness the Christmas float brings to so many people, gives a really good feeling about Christmas.
This year we greatly appreciated all the support we have received from many members of local community groups who have come out in the evenings to help with the collecting. It all goes to prove just how much good can come out of us all working together.
We would also wish to thank the Manager and the PR Ambassador at Sainsbury’s, Heaton Park, for making the arrangements for the Father Christmas Sleigh to be at Sainsbury’s for 2 Fridays so that we could make further collections. The collections there were a great success, not only did they significantly increase the collected amount, but also gave us great enjoyment meeting the public.
Middleton Rotary Club will hold a Presentation Evening on 6th February when cheques will be presented to various local community groups and charities, always a special and rewarding night for us.
Members and Friends of Middleton Rotary Club enjoyed a Christmas Dinner together at the Norton Grange Hotel and after the meal the Rev. Linda Bishop, the minister for Long Street Methodist Church, gave the Christmas Address.
We were all then entertained with songs sung by Sipho Fubesi and Lucinda Scott who were accompanied by Denise Scott, Lucinda’s mother, on the keyboard.
Sipho, from South Africa, a former student at The Royal Northern College of Music and is now pursuing a career as an opera singer. He recently made his debut at Covent Garden.
Lucinda is a student at Manchester University studying music and is hoping to take a post graduate course at The Royal Northern College of Music to study opera singing.
So we now look forward to the New Year, 2012 is going to be another busy year with a number of fund raising events already planned. As always let’s enjoy what it has to bring.

What a Christmas that was
With the financial climate the way it is we were expecting a slight downturn in takings from the Christmas collections this year. What a great surprise it was to find the people of Middleton in very generous moods. With our collection hitting the streets of Middleton and also on duty at Sainsbury’s (Heaton Park) for two Friday mornings, we accumulated a total of £5,370.75.
Fantastic! A very big thank you to all who helped out.
Join us, we meet on Monday nights at Norton Grange, contact Stuart Sawle for more information: Stuart@sysop.co.uk
You would be made very welcome.
