PRESIDENT NORMAN’S WISDOM - Nov '08
Four months have passed by, so quickly, since the start of the new Rotary year and now I am sitting down at my desk thinking about the next two months finishing up with Christmas.
During the past two months the pace of Rotary has not slowed down for one minute. The weekly club meetings have had a wide and varied selection of speakers and subjects. Looking at the programme, this trend is continuing and long may it do so. When the club has a programme planned so well in advance, and members can see who will be speaking on a particular subject, it gives members the opportunity to invite guests and hopefully potential new members.
The District Conference held in Southport was an extremely pleasant weekend and those from the Middleton Club settled in well at the Royal Clifton Hotel. We did have a problem with a lift. John and Pat were informed at about 4.00pm on Friday that the lift repair team were leaving Manchester. At 4.15pm the lift repair team were seen marching through the hotel. Not bad eh! Considering it took some members nearly two hours to do the same journey. I think that RI needs to look in to whom they send to a District Conference like ours. The President’s Representative was hardly the person to inspire us with his message. I do hope that the DG’s report to RI will convey my thoughts.
Finally we welcomed Ged to our membership and we wish him a long and happy time with the Middleton Club.
So, what about the next two months. Collecting at Sainsbury’s and Whisky Tasting all on the same day Friday 7th November.
The following Sunday lunch at the Old Boars Head should be a great family day out. Meet at 12.30pm for lunch at 1.00pm I do hope that our Friends of Rotary will be able to join with us. Monday the 17th a visit to Manchester Town Hall followed by supper at the British Protection.
December dawns and Christmas gets underway. Preparation of the Christmas float, Father Christmas in the Arndale Centre. Christmas float collection and finally 22nd December our Christmas gathering at the Norton Grange.
Enjoy Rotary, I do.
Norman.

PRESIDENT NORMAN’S WISDOM - Sept '08
Two months have passed already and as I sit and reflect what has gone on I say to myself ‘an awful lot’.
After the potential heartache of the Saddleworth Male Voice Choir concert, it turned out to be a wonderful evening and we were able to give donations to both St.Michael’s and St.Leonard’s.
During the past two months as a Club we have visited Eccles for their changeover, and Heywood to listen to the District Governor deliver his message.
We were involved with the Midnight Half Marathon Walk then on the following day with Midfest where PP Jim's Classical Car Festival proved a great hit.
Rob's Book Fair was a first, and of course it was Rob's first event to be actively involved with. Thanks to Janice and her team for their input, we all most certainly increased our muscles over those 48 hours!
Finally Summer Camp, a wet day but one enjoyed by all our visitors, club members and Brassey Street members as well. After bowling our visitors were taken to various members' homes and later we met at the Old Boars Head for a Potato Pie Supper and a lovely presentation by the Campers who talked about their lives and their aspirations.
9th August was one wet and soggy day; nevertheless the BBQ at Jane’s was a most successful evening. Everyone was most generous in raising £2251 for the water project. Thank you.
Finally 23rd August saw our Service of Thanksgiving at St.Leonard's Church, Middleton, followed by a Cheese and Wine Reception at the Old Grammar School. With around 75 attending, including the Mayor and Mayoress of Rochdale, and many past Rotarians of the club, it was a truly nostalgic and most enjoyable evening of celebration.
Thinking of the weekly club programme I must congratulate all our Speaker Hosts for the excellent Speakers and subjects provided. I hope that the standard that has been set progresses throughout the year.
October 10th is Charter Night at the Norton Grange. Reception 7.00pm and Dinner to be served at 7.30pm
Once again our ladies are invited to attend as we share this special evening the Presentation of the Granting of our Charter 75 years ago. Our Guest Speaker this year is Gerald Holden from Barrowford who comes highly recommended via Ken Davies (Rochdale East and Springhill Hospice). Conference rounds off this period and those who are attending are looking forward to plenty of fun, entertainment and Rotary involvement.

OUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS! (2/7/08)
Or should we say Norman’s Wisdom? –
'What an exciting time this is – the beginning of the Rotary year and before us we have a very full programme, as we look forward to the celebrations for the club’s 75th year in Rotary.
What celebrations they will be and I ask you all to get actively involved to ensure success and fun is had.
Our plans and projects have been put together in the clubs business plan and this will be distributed to you all shortly. I do appreciate that you cannot each get involved with everything in the plan, but do hope that you will maximise your input, so that fellowship in Rotary can come to the forefront.'

* The 23rd June was a significant date of the Rotary year as it saw Norman Wellens, whose father was Club President in 1944, installed as the 75th President of the Club at the Norton Grange. The retiring Club President Jim Kenyon was thanked by Norman for his tremendous input into Rotary and especially the Rotary Club of Middleton. During his year notable changes within the Club have seen the introduction of lady members and also a completely new facet, Friends of the Rotary Club of Middleton. Retiring President Jim thank his team and all the members for their support throughout the year. Norman has previously been President at Middleton back in 1980/81, now almost 25 years on he said he was looking forward to a year of fresh challenges and was just as excited at the prospect as he was back then.
The Officers for the new Rotary Year at Middleton are; Vice President Peter Hayward; 1st Vice President Janice Powell; Secretary John Pedley; Treasurer Keith Trinnaman.
They arrange their programme which includes supporting local activities throughout Middleton and the Metropolitan Borough such as Springhill Hospice, the Childer Awards, Medals for the Junior Football inter schools Championships as well as worldwide projects supporting the provision of clean drinking water in Kenya, educating children in India, providing Shoe Boxes in the eastern Sector of Europe. The club also hope to raise funds for Prostate Cancer Charity by organising participation in the Great Manchester10k run in May 2009.
